Teeth whitening or tooth bleaching is a non-invasive treatment and is extremely popular with our patients. In many cases your smile can be "brightened up" through teeth whitening producing a visibly noticeable difference.
In order to carry out teeth whitening we bleach teeth using hydrogen peroxide which breaks down and washes through the tooth taking unsightly stains with it.
The most common teeth whitening method is use a tray system with the bleaching solution in the form of a gel that the patient uses at home. This usually uses a 10% solution of hydrogen peroxide. This method takes 6-7 nights to produce a visibly noticeable effect. This lasts for 2-3 years but often patients will use the tray as a top for one night every 6-9 months.
At the surgery we will discuss with you whether you are a suitable teeth whitening case and will show you what is a reasonable expectation prior to commencing treatment. We will also provide you with a full set of instructions of what to do and what not to do during the treatment. We take a shade match before and after teeth whitening treatment in order to compare the difference.
For specific cases for example in an individual discoloured front tooth we can carry out a more intensive tooth bleaching procedure at the surgery which, although more time consuming, can produce an excellent result in selected cases.
